Suwodi Dutta Bordoloi (California)

Sattriya


Suwodi Dutta Bordoloi is an accomplished Sattriya dancer with over 20 years of training in the art form. She started learning Sattriya at a young age from Shri Narayan Saikia who hails from the ‘Kamalabari’ Sattra in Majuli, Assam. She was awarded the ‘Upaadhi’ in 2000 from Assam Sattra Mahasabha – the umbrella organization for Sattriya in Assam. For the last 12 years she has trained under the tutelage of one of the most prominent exponents of Sattriya in the present era – Padma Shri and Sangeet Natak Academy awardee Guru ‘Ghanakanta Bora Bayanarcharya’.

Suwodi has performed at various national and international events that include the Melharmony Festival (University of Wisconsin Madison), International Human Rights Art Festival (New York), Worcester Polytechnic Institute (Massachusetts), Assam Convention of North America (Calgary, Canada), etc. She has held lectures and workshops to introduce Sattriya to children in the US. She currently is a fellow with the Aseemkala Initiaitve, US.

Suwodi’s goal is practicing, preserving and teaching the unique traditional dance form of Sattriya. Because of her personal journey of overcoming injuries, Suwodi is also passionate about spreading awareness of proper training to prevent injuries among dancers.
